Weimin He (PhD, ARE)

Born in Northeast China

Artist-in-residence in the Oxford University’s Estates Directorate.

Weimin is currently creating artworks that reflect the development of the Oxford University ROQ site.

Weimin studied painting in the Fine Art Department of Harbin Normal University. He then studied postgraduate course in printmaking in The Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang. In 1999, after working eight years as a professional artist in Heilongjiang province, he received a scholarship from the Muban Foundation and moved to the UK to study printmaking in the University of Ulster in Belfast and was rewarded DPhil degree in 2005. The same year he started to work as research fellow on Chinese painting at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.

Since the early 1990’s Weimin has dedicated most of time to woodcuts. His works are varied in contents, depicting scenes of everyday life in town and countryside, landscapes and portraits. His style is bold and innovative, using broad and vivid strokes with sharp outlines to produce black and white lines.  Inspired by traditional Chinese seal cutting, he has created his individual style to portray contemporary scenes of both China and Britain.

Weimin’s works have been exhibited internationally over the last two decades. He was awarded the Lu Xun Prize in 1999 for his achievements in printmaking. His artworks are in many public and private collections, including The British Museum, The Portland Museum and The China National Gallery in Beijing.
